NYSBDC Celebrates New York’s Small Businesses on 2024 Summer Client Roadshow

Albany, NY – The New York State Small Business Development Center (NYSBDC) proudly recognizes outstanding achievements in small businesses across the state. As part of the first half of the Summer 2024 Client Awards Roadshow, the NYSBDC honored five businesses and entrepreneurs who have made significant contributions to their communities and industries. These awards celebrate the dedication, resilience, and innovative spirit of New York’s small businesses at their place of business, celebrating with friends, families, and local communities.

Community Impact Business of the Year Award: Heather Boxill-Yakalis, Yak’s Youth Center
Oneonta, NY; Otsego County

Heather Boxill-Yakalis, founder of Yak’s Youth Center in Oneonta, NY, has been awarded the Community Impact Business of the Year Award. With support from the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Binghamton University and various grants, Heather has created a vital resource for families in the community. Yak’s Youth Center has grown into a cornerstone of support, providing a safe and engaging environment for children while empowering families to thrive.

“Yak’s Youth Center remains a vital resource for families, no matter their schedule. Heather has created more than just a childcare center—she has built a community within a community. A place where families feel supported, where children feel safe, and where the future is nurtured with care and compassion.” – NYSBDC State Director Sonya Smith

Phoenix Entrepreneur of the Year Award: Rebecca Magnuson; She Sings Cafe
Mayville, NY; Chautauqua County

Rebecca Magnuson, owner of She Sings Cafe in Mayville, NY, has been honored with the Phoenix Entrepreneur of the Year Award. She Sings Cafe is a place of empowerment and healing, offering job opportunities and a platform for women to share their stories through music and art.

“It was an honor to be in Mayville, NY, with Rebecca Magnuson, her staff, and her family to highlight her for the Phoenix Award. Like the Phoenix, she is giving those who have dealt with abuse the support to rise again. A space when others may have thought they lost their purpose or place and a voice as “She Sings.” As a DV survivor, what she does for others is commendable. No matter your background, telling your story and giving support can help others gain courage as well!” – NYSBDC State Director Sonya Smith

Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award: Greyson Wells; Pop, Stop & Roll Boba
Binghamton, NY; Tompkins County

As a high school freshman, Greyson Wells was recognized with the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his successful venture into the world of business. Greyson and his mom, Jessie, launched a pop-up boba tea stand at local events in Tompkins County with the guidance of the SBDC at Binghamton. Despite the challenges of permits and production, Greyson’s hard work paid off, resulting in initial success and plans to grow in the future.

“Greyson’s achievement is a shining example of the entrepreneurial potential within our youth. With Gen Zs starting businesses at an unprecedented rate, 67% of them doing so before even graduating high school, it is crucial for community resources such as the SBDCs, who played a pivotal role in providing the mentorship and technical assistance these young entrepreneurs need to start, grow, and succeed.” – NYSBDC State Director Sonya Smith

Procurement Business of the Year Award: Mary Shepherd; BGM Supply
Utica, NY; Oneida County

Mary’s leadership and her team’s excellence in government contracting have significantly contributed to the local economy. The award ceremony at their new warehouse highlighted the importance of small businesses in driving economic growth.

“Mary achieved her MWBE (Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise) certification and recertification. This has been instrumental in opening doors and providing valuable opportunities for her amazing business. Procurement opportunities offer established businesses a vital pathway to diversify revenue streams and develop robust growth strategies. While opportunities are plentiful, navigating the process requires extensive knowledge and a strong understanding of the process. This is where the SBDC can help“ – NYSBDC State Director Sonya Smith
