Martin’s Pretzel Bakery was recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration as the 2026 National Small Business Manufacturer of the Year during National Small Business Week in Washington, D.C.

The national recognition highlights small businesses that demonstrate resilience, leadership, and meaningful economic impact within their communities. National Small Business Week highlights outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and community members from across the country.

Martin’s Handmade Pretzels, the family business behind Martin’s Pretzel Bakery, has become a strong example of rural manufacturing growth in northern New York. Nominated by the North Country Small Business Development Center hosted by SUNY Canton, and assisted by Business Advisor Jennifer McCluskey, Justus Martin and Josiah Martin have continued a pretzel-making tradition that spans nearly a century while helping the business reach new regional and national markets.

After purchasing and relocating the bakery to Moira, NY, Justus and Josiah worked alongside family members to continue the company’s hand-crafted production process rooted in long-standing family tradition. Less than two months after opening in 2020, a devastating fire threatened to end the operation. With support from the North Country SBDC, the Martins navigated recovery efforts, rebuilt the business, and continued planning for long-term stability and growth.

Along the way, Martin’s Pretzel Bakery also worked with additional economic development partners across New York State, showing how local and regional support can help small businesses recover from setbacks and continue building toward long-term growth.

Today, Martin’s Pretzel Bakery continues to create jobs and strengthen its role within the local community while maintaining its traditional hand-twisted production methods. The company’s growth reflects how small-scale manufacturing businesses can contribute to rural economic development while preserving craftsmanship and family-owned traditions.

“We are deeply grateful for this recognition and for everyone who has supported us throughout our journey,” the business shared following the announcement. “This honor reflects the hard work of our family, employees, and community.”

Congratulations to the Martin’s Pretzel Bakery team on this national recognition. Their story reflects the role small businesses play in strengthening local communities, preserving family traditions, and supporting rural economies across New York State.

“Martin’s Pretzel Bakery reflects the strength of rural manufacturing, family tradition, and small business resilience in New York State.”
