The New York Small Business Development Centers (NYSBDC) are proud to announce that State Director Sonya Smith has been elected Treasurer of the America’s SBDC (ASBDC) Board of Directors, the national association representing nearly 1,000 service centers across the country. Smith’s election was part of the broader announcement of the 2025–2026 America’s SBDC Board of Directors.
In her new role, Smith will oversee the financial stewardship of the association, ensuring accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability in support of SBDC networks nationwide. Working alongside the Board, staff, and stakeholders, she will help advance America’s SBDC’s mission of empowering entrepreneurs to start, grow, and thrive in communities across the United States.
Smith brings extensive leadership experience from her tenure as State Director of the NYSBDC, where she has spearheaded strategic initiatives, expanded statewide partnerships, and advocated for resources to strengthen small business development. In addition to her state-level leadership, she also serves nationally as co-chair of the ASBDC Legislative Committee and chair of the Millennial & Youth Entrepreneurship Interest Group.
“I am honored to share that I have been elected to serve as the new Treasurer of the America’s SBDC (ASBDC) Board of Directors,” said Smith. “In this role, I look forward to working closely with my fellow board members, our national leadership, and the incredible network of SBDC professionals across the country. Together, we will continue to strengthen the financial stewardship of the association, advocate for the resources our networks need, and ensure we remain a trusted partner for America’s small businesses.
I am grateful for the confidence placed in me and excited to contribute to the mission of supporting entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth nationwide. Thank you to my colleagues and mentors who have encouraged and supported me on this journey. I look forward to serving the ASBDC network in this capacity.”
“These exceptional leaders bring invaluable experience and fresh perspectives that will strengthen our mission of empowering small businesses across America,” said Charles “Tee” Rowe, President & CEO of America’s SBDC. “I’m confident their strategic insights will help expand our impact and strengthen the vital role SBDCs play in America’s economy.”
Smith’s election to the ASBDC Board reflects both her dedication to advancing opportunities for small businesses and the recognition of her leadership at the national level. Her new role underscores the importance of New York’s voice in shaping the future of small business development across the country.

“Together, we will continue to strengthen the financial stewardship of the association, advocate for the resources our networks need, and ensure we remain a trusted partner for America’s small businesses.”
