The New York Small Business Development Centers marked SBDC Day 2026 with a Friends of New York SBDC event at the New York State Capitol, bringing together community leaders, economic development partners, small business advocates, and legislative leaders for a conversation on the state of small business in New York.
Held March 25, 2026, at the Legislative Office Building in Albany, the event focused on the role small businesses play in strengthening communities, supporting job creation, driving neighborhood growth, and contributing to New York’s economic vitality.
The program featured a panel discussion with New York SBDC State Director Sonya Smith and state legislative leaders, including New York State Senator April N.M. Baskin, Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business; Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, Chair of the Assembly Standing Committee on Small Business; and Assemblyman Al Stirpe, Chair of the Assembly Standing Committee on Economic Development, Job Creation, Commerce and Industry.
During the discussion, panelists shared perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing small businesses across the state, as well as the importance of connecting entrepreneurs with state, regional, and local resources.
The New York SBDC also previewed new data tools being developed to help policymakers better understand New York’s small business landscape and connect constituents with available support. These tools are designed to strengthen access to information about small business trends, regional needs, and resources available through the statewide SBDC network.
The event offered an opportunity to build connections, elevate the needs of small businesses, and recognize the partners and advocates working to ensure entrepreneurs across New York are seen, supported, and connected to resources.
