Stony Brook, NY – April 2026 — A growing effort to expand access to artificial intelligence tools for small businesses is taking shape on Long Island, with Stony Brook University serving as a key hub for collaboration, training, and innovation.

The Long Island Small Business Development Center at Stony Brook University is part of the newly launched LIA-AI Growth Academy, an initiative led by the Long Island Association through its philanthropic arm, the LIA Foundation, and supported by Google.org in partnership with Stony Brook University.

Applications are now open to small businesses with 20 or fewer full-time employees located in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Fifty businesses will be selected to participate in a structured program that combines virtual training sessions, mentorship, and a final in-person session at Stony Brook University.

Participants who complete the program will receive a $5,000 grant to support AI implementation, along with an AI Literacy for Business digital badge recognizing the skills and competencies gained through the program.

The Long Island SBDC will serve as a mentorship resource throughout the program, supporting participants as they explore how AI can be applied to real business needs, from streamlining operations to improving customer engagement, financial management, and productivity.

“This initiative reflects the growing importance of accessible, practical tools that help small businesses adapt and grow,” said Sonya Smith, State Director of the New York SBDC. “Through this collaboration, we’re helping entrepreneurs better understand and apply AI in ways that support long-term success and strengthen the regional economy.”

The LIA-AI Growth Academy reflects an effort to ensure small businesses across Long Island can access the tools, knowledge, and support needed to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Applications close April 22, 2026.
